Unit 207 Board Officers
Roles and Responsibilities

Tournament Coordinator (continued)

The tournament coordinator schedules all games (unit championships and higher) to avoid player conflicts that will effect participation. The tournament coordinator submits the unit’s sectional tournament dates to the District tournament coordinator for approval before sanctioning by the ACBL Tournament Department.

Assigning Directors to Unit Events

In October/November, contact experienced directors (judgment) asking what events, if any, they’d like to direct. Send the directors a schedule of next year’s events. Try to portion the events out fairly to the pool of directors.

Two directors are needed for City Championship (June), Christmas Party (December) and Annual Meeting (February). Once assignments are made, send information to the Unit Board. A few weeks before an event, remind the director(s) who have been assigned to that event. Historically, the list is Perkins, Humphrey, McAllister, Sanders, Lacy, LaShelle, Sands and Davis.

District and Unit Events/Tournaments

The District is not involved with Unit Championships. The Unit chooses when to schedule those games and the Tournament Coordinator (currently Larry Davis) works directly with the ACBL. An event or tournament can be added/canceled as late as even one day before it is scheduled. The Unit Board should decide what/when the events are held.

Unit 207 gets 24 Unit Championship game sessions a year. (The unit-level NAP and GNT do not count against the 24.) Historically, the Unit has run 9 or 10 sessions, the BCA has run 10 (at times and types of their choosing) and the remainder are offered to other Unit 207 clubs (they usually choose December dates and have holiday parties). The Unit first chooses the times of its 9 or 10, then the clubs choose their times. The Unit picks the type of event (pairs/teams), the director(s), bridge fees to be charged (if any), if there is a 299er section, one/two sessions, meal (if any).

Historically:
  1. The Annual Meeting (February) has been a free, one-session pairs event with a separate 299er section and two directors.
  2. The City Championship (June) has been two single-session pair events with a meal in between, a separate 299er section, and two directors (must play in both sessions to win the City Championship and both players must be Unit 207 members).
  3. Member Appreciation game has been a free one-session pairs with separate 299er section.
  4. The Holiday Party (December) has been one or two free single-session pairs events (if two, free lunch), two directors and a separate 299er section.
  5. Two team events, one being an Eight-Is-Enough game.

Open Tournaments should be scheduled three years out (reserving the dates – location can be determined later). (Do not sign a hotel contract until ACBL has approved the dates.) We have historic times of early January (first full Thursday - Friday), late February/early March (BCA-run), late April/mid May, late September/early October (at least two weeks after the New Braunfels sectional). The Unit Tournament Coordinator schedules these directly with the District Tournament Coordinator (currently Scott Humphrey). Only required coordination with the District Board is for an NLM Regional. (Ask for that at a District Board meeting.)

Limited Sectional Tournaments (NLM, 0-nn) are scheduled one to two years out, directly with the District Tournament Coordinator. The Board should look at the District tournament calendar (posted on the District 16 website) when choosing Limited Sectional dates (don’t conflict with “nearby” tournaments or any regionals).

We historically have had three NLM (0-500) sectionals [(February, June, November) and three 0-200 tournaments each year (April, August, December). (The NLM could be (0-750), the others could be 0-100.)
