Candidates for Unit 207 Board
2026-2028 Term
Busico

SUSANNA BUSICO writes: I grew up in Carlsbad, New Mexico and learned to play rudimentary bridge on the floor of my dorm room at Texas Tech University in the late 60’s. It was such a fun way to unwind after a day of classes and hours of doing homework. I played party bridge (very casually) off and on while moving around with the Air Force, stopped for 30 years because of teaching school and raising kids, then took lessons at BCA seven years ago. I was hooked immediately and grateful to have such great instructors at the club. I so appreciate the bridge community here and all the work put into making it a vibrant, fun group. I would like to pay back as a board member and to help carry the work forward.

McMinn

WILEY MCMINN writes: I learned bridge at LSU in the mid 60’s and was hooked. Played as much as I could until I got married and graduated. Bridge then took aback seat to kids and work for 40 years. Started again in 2005 and have been avidly playing ever since. Been a member here since 2006 and have become a director and certified teacher. I want everyone at all levels to enjoy this wonderful game as much as I do.

Phelps

JEANNIE PHELPS writes: Card games have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. Growing up, our entire family-young and old alike- would gather around the table to play Canasta and Rummy during the holidays. Those games created lasting memories and a lifelong love of cards. After retiring, I decided to learn Mah Jongg, but it didn't quite ignite my enthusiasm. Looking for a greater challenge, I turned to Bridge-having heard just how demanding the game could be.I discovered the Bridge Center had Beginner classes & it immediately captivated me. I have been playing and learning ever since.

Southerland

JAMIE SOUTHERLAND writes: I am seeking a second term on the Unit 207 Board, where I currently serves as Treasurer. Bringing extensive nonprofit financial and governance experience, Jamie also serves as Treasurer and Executive Committee member for ACBL District 16 and as Treasurer/Trustee of the ACBL Charity Foundation. A dedicated player and emerging tournament director, he is committed to strengthening Unit 207’s finances, supporting local clubs and tournaments, and helping grow bridge in the Austin area.

Thompson

SUSAN THOMPSON writes: In March 2017, I went cold turkey to the Bridge Center of Austin to check out the scene. I began in “the incubator,” with Sally Sassen teaching and directing the games. I was immediately intrigued by the bidding boxes, interesting people and snacks. I met my steady bridge partner the second time I went and the rest is history! When I think back on the plays I made back then, I don’t see how Sally kept a straight face. For 2020, Bridge Base Online has been a daily source of social contact and intellectual challenge. I am interested in giving back to the organization that has provided me with so many hours of enjoyment. I enjoy organizing and I enjoy people. I am a retired psychiatrist, but do not worry: I will not be practicing! I ENCOURAGE CONTINUATION OF THE high quality education programs and mentorships. I would also like to hear about ways the CLUBS HAVE attracted new players and see if I can help bring more in. Thank you for considering me for the board.
